Use the top third of the resume to grab attention and sell yourself in a convincing way.  Show what you offer in a way that can be read in 7 to 10 seconds.  Make the reader stop and say “this person has what we are looking for.”

  1. Write a headline in 1 or 2 lines that provides focus to the resume.
  2. Support headline with 4-5 keys areas, bulleted.
  3. Make it point where you are going, not where you have been.
    1. State qualities and expertise you have that are needed for the next role.
  4. Avoid bland statements about your “objective.”
  5. Avoid writing in long paragraphs; use small chunks of information and make the point in 2 or 3 lines.
  6. Avoid clichés:
    1. For example, if you want to say “outstanding oral and writing communication skills,” find a way to say it in a unique or fresh way by stating WHO your audience is and how your skills can help the business.
  7. Don’t sound like everyone else.
